STORM GULLY

from WILD HEBRIDES by Roger Boughton

/

about

There are times when visiting the Hebrides you can be unlucky. The weather can be continuously inclement, it just rains and blows for days on end. Your first response is to “hanker down” until it blows over and that wonderful blue sky that we all love is back again.

This is a mistake as you will miss the sights and sounds that are a very important part of these “Wild Hebrides”, so after a couple of house bound days you just have to get the waterproofs on and go for a tramp. Let the wind buffet around you and seek out a spot to watch the waves thundering on to the rocks with the cries of the Grey Seal, Gulls and Oystercatcher all around as they too, seek to avoid the worst of the weather.

On this particular occasion, I found shelter in a rocky gully under a cliff and waited until the thunderstorm had passed. Avoiding, as best I could the dripping water off the cliff face above me; thrilling to the sound of the surging sea rushing past; while overhead being deafened by thunderclaps.

Wonderful, and so enjoyable being close to these unstoppable forces of nature.
