These islands on “the edge of the sea” as the Vikings named them, can be split between the Outer Hebrides and the Inner Hebrides. The sounds on this CD could be heard on many, if not all of them, it aims to provide the listener with a memoir of the natural places they have visited on their journeys through the Hebrides.
It may provide some solace in their busy world where they live,and hopefully a relaxation and realisation that they must visit those wonderful islands again, seeking out other places that are always there to find, and more importantly, to hear those glorious uplifting natural sounds that have fortified me and many others that have visited these spectacular isles during their life.
When visiting the Hebrides, especially on the smaller islands, you nearly always hear the sound of the sea wherever you are on the island. Sometimes, after a few wind free quiet days, you will find yourself sitting by a wall or in the sand dunes, looking and listening to the glorious world about you, when you suddenly realise you cannot hear the sea, something is different, something is missing, where has the sea gone? Do not worry it is still there, gathering its strength waiting to be wild again.
There is always something different to see and hear, each time you visit. So when you do manage to come again may your visit be fruitful and fulfil your heart’s desires. Species of birds are mentioned on some tracks but the list is never meant to be conclusive. These recordings have been made in many different place throughout the Hebrides, many of them though were made on my favourite island of Colonsay.
Technical Note
Try listening to the CD through headphones, as most of the recordings were made using a binaural technique, sometimes called a “dummy head” technique. This captures the dynamic of the sounds in a very natural way, and allows the listener to immerse themselves more.
Just close your eyes and be spirited away to those wonderful islands.
