The Machair, the Machair, the Machair, this wondrous habitat to be only found in these glorious islands, the Hebrides. For hundreds, if not thousands of years, this flower filled, herb rich habitat has been nurtured by the Hebrideans to graze their animals and this has allowed particular flora and fauna to prosper as well. Skylark and Meadow Pipit provide a wonderful sound backdrop to the verdant greens and sparkling blues of the ever present sea.
Within the gentle folds of the Machair can be found small hidden wet places that have built up over many years, sometimes holding water all year. They become little lochans, special places that act as powerful magnets to many breeding waders such as Snipe, Lapwing and Redshank. Ducks like Mallard and Shelduck enjoy them as well, as do those noisy Black Headed Gulls.
