ISLAND SANCTUARY

from WILD HEBRIDES by Roger Boughton

/

about

There are a few small islands in the Hebrides that have offered sanctuary to the persecuted over many centuries.

These island were usually religious settlements that were dedicated to offer refuge for the oppressed. A place where the refugee could rest and regain strength both physically and mentally. One has to wonder how this island solitude, surrounded by the constant sounds of the sometimes thunderous and uninviting sea, combined with the natural sound like the “crex crex” of the Corncrake. and the mocking calls of gulls, that can call day in day out and even all through the night, might turn what was a much needed safe haven, into an oppressive prison with little chance of escape.
